Game, Set, Community: Australia Welcomes the Pickleball Community Cup - Gawler

The National Pickleball League, in partnership with Pickleball Aus, is set to launch the inaugural Pickleball Community Cup—a new event series designed to celebrate and elevate amateur play across the country. The journey kicks off in Gawler, South Australia, the first stop in what promises to become one of the premier events for beginner and intermediate players. 

Envisioned as a travelling series, the Community Cup will bring high-quality competition to some of Australia’s leading venues, offering community players an experience typically reserved for elite-level sport. 

Pickleball’s rapid rise is no accident. It is a sport built on accessibility, inclusivity, and a uniquely social spirit. Whether you are four or sixty, a first-time player or a seasoned enthusiast, the court offers an open invitation. The Community Cup leans into this ethos, creating a space where participation is celebrated as much as performance, and where community is as central as the scoreboard.

At its core, this initiative is not just about competition—it is about connection. By centering the competition on beginner players, the Community Cup bridges an important gap between casual social play and elite competition. It offers players a chance to play in a professionally run environment, without the barriers that often accompany high-performance sport. The result is an experience that is both aspirational and accessible. This level of play is where the community truly lives.

“This new Pickleball tournament series offers a premium event and tournament opportunity to amateur players nationally at the best venues around the country,” said National Pickleball League CEO Ron Shell. “Pickleball is a participation sport at heart, and this series supports its continued growth with a genuine competitive structure behind it.”

From 31 July to 2 August, Gawler will become a focal point for Australia’s amateur pickleball scene. Across three days, the event will blend competition with community, placing equal emphasis on player experience both on and off the court.

The format reflects this balance: a Friday evening social competition sets the tone, followed by gender and mixed doubles. It is a structure designed not only to challenge players, but to foster interaction, connection, and a shared sense of belonging.

Friday - 5-Point Pickle

First-to-5-point matches in a continuous play or knockout format. MC-led with music, food, drink, and live sport. Club colours encouraged. Prizes for the winner.

Saturday - Gender Doubles (Male Doubles + Female Doubles)

Sunday - Mixed Doubles

“The Pickleball Community Cup is a celebration of the players who make up the Australian pickleball scene,” said Tennis Australia Chief Tennis Officer Tom Larner. “It recognises the importance of community in the sport’s growth and provides an opportunity for players to engage in a premium, inclusive environment.”

As pickleball continues its ascent as one of the fastest-growing sports globally, initiatives like the Community Cup highlight what makes it so compelling. Beyond the rallies and results, it is the people—the conversations between matches, the friendships formed courtside, the collective energy of a welcoming community—that define the experience.
